Werner Herzog reads Curious George

"And vat does ze fat man get for his troubles?
Nothing but a broken jaw and to be laughed at by mousies."

If Germany ever produced something reminiscent of brilliance, it is this. Forget Fritz Lang, Ernst Lubitsch and the other guys: Werner Herzog reads Curious George.

Okay, it's not really Herzog reading. But it could be. A dark and existentialist update of a children's classic.

Strangely enough, this was one of the very first things I ever watched on YouTube.

I remember being bothered by this book as a child because of the dungeon-like appearance of the jail cell into which George is thrown after ringing the fire alarm--I know this was written in 1941, but even THEN people had heard of Penal Reform...seriously, this picture reminded me of Arthur Rackham's illustration for "Oliver Twist" showing Fagin biting his nails in Newgate the night before he is hanged.

But I'll say it again here--I'd LOVE to see a Curious George movie with Klaus Kinski as the Man With the Yellow Hat--That would be sublime!

Lolita: The Man in the Yellow Hat always made me very nervous. An overly curious, nearly human monkey and a "trainer" that dresses in yellow jumpsuit takes the imagination to some very dark places.

Practically the greatest thing I have ever viewed.

After seeing this, I immediately went and showed it to my younger brothers (that's the kind of older sister I am! haha) and then today I showed it to my Mum.

We all laughed hysterically. My mother even stated that she wished there were actual books like this that she could have read to us all when we were very young.

This should explain the kind of family I have. ;-D

I've been terribly lax in reading my favorite film blogs, so today I opened my "favorite blogs" page on Silents and Talkies and opened every one of them in a new tab, so I could catch up.. I was so sad to come here and see you haven't updated since June!! :( I'm going to peruse the archives a bit and hope maybe next time I come back there'll be a new post? maybe? please?

miss you! :)

No idea why I left my last comment on your Woody Allen post.
Here would have been a much more sensible place for it.
